Of March

Poem Body

She is like the firstborn child
out of bed in the morning --
small feet stepping onto the cold floor,
slipping into summoned rain boots
itching to leap out the screen door
to count the crocus and laugh with the warbling robin.

She is like the restless child at recess
finally released from the classroom,
sprinting to the playground, its revelry
stirring just beneath the snow, waiting
patiently for the thaw, the germination,
the first receptive signs of euphoric new life.

March is like a carefree blanket,
sweeping herself up and over
the end of the bed, as if shouting,
"SURPRISE!"
almost falling to the floor, messy and eager,
wild and ready.

She is the curtain flying open
to the first act of a bold Spring play,
and the madness of anticipation
before the season's first homerun.
March is the over-the-shoulder glance
back to hear Winter's final farewell,

"Awaken, and arise!"

you brought the exuberance of March,
a particularly delightful child with ruddy cheeks
and enough breath for three adults! Love this!
This needs to be read by anyone longing for Spring;
watching out the window for paper-wrapped and leaf-dusted
breezes to march down the road. Excellent reading, a half dozen times now.

I needed your poem today, thanks!

It brightened up a day that had me plowing 10 inches of wet snow for four hours. When I got back in and took off my layers and layers of clothes, and with a hot cup of coffee, there was your poem.

Many thanks for a job well done! - Will

Snow is beautiful, but I'm sorry you received so much, especially all at once! I hope things calm down a bit out your way. Stay dry and warm! Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts!

to my childhood. For a brief moment I smelled the rain as if I'd never smelled it before, saw the crocuses, heard the screen door, felt the playground mulch in my hands, and greeted the sun as it burst in through my opening window. Like a split-second heartbreak, hope, sorrow, and joy. Thank you for that reliving experience. I will come back to this poem often.
