Poem Body

Narrative Shop entry #2 "A Day In The Life Of...

a pussycat am I, my name is Bennington,
for short, they call me Benny, or Ben
Steve and Cat are my family,
we started way back when.

I was just a kitten, then...
over seventeen years ago
they sought out a breeder
wanting not a cat of "show".

just a Birman of the breed
not perfect of markings, just so,
when they found the right one
in their hearts, they would know

a baby, six weeks old
playing with my sister and brother
joyful renewal, they knew at once
I would be the one, and no other

for many a year pampered and loved
I've lived an ideal cat's life,
an indoor cat been cloistered
away from all harm and strife.

but all care and good intentions
could not save me from old age
now kidney failure and arthritis
have captured me in their cage...

my last two days will be spent
in the arms of the family I own,
for tomorrow I go to the vet
to find a peaceful end to this life I've known...

be coming back to this later today. ~ Geez.
Ok, I have had time to get some things done and I really wanted to tell you, that I really like the dialog from Benny! He is
clear that he has had a great life with your family and appreciates the care you've given him. These kind of poems always make me tear up and you did a bang-up job! ~ Geez.

Benny/Bennington...
quit a lovable character his whole life. when he was a kitten, he was swinging by one paw, from the light fixtures. he is loved and so are we. sorry for the tears.

*hugs, Cat

about the tears. They were for all the people and pets [children to some], that are having to deal with these issues. and some like me who have had to do it too. ~ Geez.

Hi Cat,

A lovely little poem true to your name, filled with genuine sentiments of love and warmth.

Nice piece, very sad at the end.

I hate those sort of trips to the vet.

Candlewitch

thanks for your kindness. I am in agony...Steven (my husband) said that Benny is doing a little better today. I don't see it..perhaps he is procrastinating...doesn't want to emotionally deal with the reality of it.

*hugs, Cat

And nicely woven in Benny's voice... the loss of a loved one is always wrenching, the sadness ever so real. I feel for you.

I can only find comfort in the joy we shared, the quality times, the years of honest caring family connection.
I need to be strong, for my 3 young granddaughters who have lost their Poppy Bill and for my son in law who has lost his father, and my daughter a father figure.

My thoughts are with you Cat, remember all the wonderful years.
Sorry for going, I suppose I'm feeling philosophical.

Big hugs

I'm not frankly interested in pussy cats.

My Latest Poem:

HER MAJESTY

I ventured out beneath the pale
Oceanic sky in the summery heat;
My thoughts were of my lover, soft, discreet,
When I found her dreaming on a rosy dale.

Her eyes were dark and of ancient folk lore;
They shimmered like diamonds in the gilded lights,
And beamed like streams from angelic nights,
From that lovely Carolingian gaze she bore.

Hi CW,

Sociopathic leanings of a previous comment aside, this was a very touching piece of narrative poetry. Thank you for putting a very personal and heart wrenching story to words for others to share. I have an elderly pet we love dearly, but we see the decline, and we know the inevitable can come any time at this point - very painful stuff to anticipate, let alone experience.

Well done piece!

Best

(we get all kinds here, don't we?!) thank you for your very sensitive response to my poem. he is peacefully at rest now, our Benny. they aren't really pets, are they...more family members! I hope you have many more precious moments with your loved one...and safe passage, when it comes time.

yesterday we went to the humane shelter and adopted a lovely ten year old "Lady" names Mia. she is a short-haired Russian Blue. she is very sweet and talkative. "and the love goes round" today she is getting used to us and the house. no one can replace Benny, but we have love in our hearts for more :)
