I am a lilly most unique,
my name is stinky skunk cabbage
because my leaves and flowers reek
I am a lilly most unique
I ooze the stench that flesh flies seek
and slugs delight in my leafage
I am a lilly most unique
my name is stinky skunk cabbage.

hello Mand
Thank you for introducing me to this unique Lilly. Poets usually write about the ones with nice fragrance, but it's not a bad idea to tell about such unique lilly. It must be very useful in a way or another.
Best wishes for you dear.
Hi Rula
Yes - the skunk cabbage is used for medical purposes - though I don't think it's edible. ( unless prepared in the proper way ). - it is an amazing lily, exhibiting thermo genesis, generating temps of 27 - 63f, melting it's way through frozen ground. The heat it generates spreads its odorous smell, attracting early insects and of course it's a nice warm place for them to recharge their batteries - a clever way for the plant to spread it's pollen. It also has contractile roots, pulling their roots further into the ground - so the plant grows downward instead of upward! All in all this lilly is quite a character with many distinguishing features. Ann Waddicor wrote a poem - much more detailed and informative than mine.
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment - much appreciated.
Hope all is well with you and family

Hellooo Raj :)
Hehe - love your little ditty!
Have entered the comp - I wrote this because lovely Ann Waddicor posted some pics of the skunk cabbage on facebook after visiting the botanical gardens. She suggested we write a poem about it - which we both did. Her poem was much more detailed and informative than mine - don't know if she's going to post it up - wish she would!
The name alone gives it character! tehe :)
Thank you so much for kindly reading and commenting Raj - much appreciated.
Keep safe
