Oh, To Close My Eyes (Something You Long For?)

Poem Body

Oh, to close my eyes, let me linger there
In the blue-green sea with the rising tides
On the coastal shores sprayed with salty air
Amid vibrant towns, painted mountain sides
Hear the ruins speak of gold deities
Run through poppy fields, red-faced as they blush
Lust for robust wine, pray with Cypress trees
As the church bells nod in a hallowed hush
Let me linger there, feel the ancient sun
Bronze my eager face, kiss the tawny wheat
Rolled between my palms as it's gently spun
I shall linger there, breathe the air so sweet

Stay, Beloved Italy, keep me near
Until your eyes meet mine, I hold you dear

Yes, a place to place on your bucket-list. Nicely done! I can almost feel the ancient sun and taste the sparkling wine.

I always appreciate your comments and thoughts. A sonnet felt like the most befitting rhyme form for precious Italy. Writing it was like a mini-visit for me.
Thanks, again!

I’ve seen these paintings in all the Italian restaurants on the hill in Providence. Great job as usual

Lavender

Until I actually see Italy for myself, I'll just close my eyes and imagine being there. Thank you for reading!

Hi Lavender,

i found this poem to be very visual. I completely understand your longing for Italy and I think you did a great job expressing it. A line which spoke to me especially was "run through poppy fields, red-faced as they blush." It was able to express a sort of unmatched joy that made me smile while reading it. thank you for sharing

Why all first letters in CAPS..

None the less ...
Italy is leg shaped
it boots at all anyway
so enjoy your imaginary visit
hope a poetry field you were looking for
lies in Italy
as a new poetic home
you have found it

good sonnet I/// love em ///can't care less of syllables //but the 14 lines are visible
ababcdcdefef and gg
is all lovedly knows
so now you too know

Lavender

Yes! A sonnet, named after sonneto in Italy, seemed so fitting for a "longing" poem. I used the traditional form - 14 lines, 10 syllables each line, with the abab...rhyme scheme. Thank you for the beautiful wish of a poetry field somewhere in Italy. And thank you, always, for reading and sharing.

I too, long for a place (which I have visited, but remains only an island in time) i knew and loved it with all my being.... now I only find it in my dreams and imagination, for places change in time. I see it longingly in my mind. may you someday see your object of longing in person.

*hugs, Cat

Lavender

Thanks for your kind wishes. Longings are initially hard to put into words, but trying is so revealing and wonderful.
Thank you!

Your sonnet was so beautiful that It created a coping mechanism in my mind as I read and understood. I collect them and pass them on you know. Look how much beauty and healing you have made possible and I will teach it. there are many
who will benefit. Even if I tell only one person!
